If you’re anything like me when I was newly-engaged, I’ll be willing to bet you already have a long list of wedding venues to tour. But I’ll also be willing to bet you weren’t picturing a Greenbrier wedding on your list. Well, I’m here to ask you, “Why Not?!” Respectfully, of course!
You might know about this historic house, and you may wonder why I’m suggesting it as a wedding venue. Well, it’s because it’s a venue like no other, with its rich roots in American history, and it serves as an excellent backdrop to your West Virginia wedding.

A Greenbrier Wedding: Full of History
The Greenbrier Resort is luxury hotel and resort near White Sulphur Springs in West Virginia. It was. built in the early 1913 and has been used for everything from a hotel, hospital, private residence, to a diplomatic detention center in its time!
But, it was made for entertaining! This resort hotel has been the premiere location for thousands of events and Greenbrier weddings throughout the last 100 years–and for good reason!
The Greenbrier resort holds 710 rooms all decorated in bright colors and patterns–including a ballroom that features gorgeously high ceilings with lavish trim and opulent decor, perfect for a reception that impresses even the pickiest guests. My favorite parts of the hotel are its incredibly unique staircases!
No Two Weddings Are Alike!
Seriously, no two Greenbrier weddings are going to be the same. With 11,000 acres of property and 55 different spaces for indoor and outdoor activities it would be hard to replicate the same choices! You will have access to the on-resort Chapel where you can tie the knot or you could choose any one of the gorgeous outdoor ceremony spaces.
Some couples choose to get ready in the Historic suites in the main hotel and others will decide to reserve the Legacy Cottages for a bit more privacy. All of the hotel rooms are decked out in the Dorothy Draper design, so you won’t have to worry about finding those iconic colors and patterns!
Truly Iconic Wedding Portraits
My favorite part about a Greenbrier wedding? The drop dead gorgeous photo opportunities throughout the resort! I absolutely love how funky every single room is and how choosing one style over another can best represent a couple. Those black and white wallpapers? *chefs kiss*
I think when planning a Greenbrier wedding it is very important to know that you won’t be finding those neutral color palettes and muted tones anywhere. The lead interior designer, Dorothy Draper, hand picked most of the colorful decor during her reign at the resort from 1925 through the 1960s. It became the signature style for The Greenbrier and the Dorothy Draper & Co. styles the hotel even today!
Elevated Guest Experience
Another plus to a Greenbrier wedding: the elevated guest experience! Trending now are the smaller, more intimate weddings that focus less on how many people can attend and more on the overall experience each guest has. This means higher quality food, hand crafted cocktails, and luxury lodgings!
You’ll definitely find that at a Greenbrier wedding! Guests will be nestled into the Alleghany Mountains near White Sulphur Springs, which is an area known for its rejuvenating qualities and relaxing atmosphere. You will choose your hors d’oeuvres and meal choices during a formal tasting. Florals are created by Gillespie’s Florals, which has been the exclusive florist for Greenbrier weddings and events since 1923. The gentlemen will have tuxedo rentals at their disposal through the in-house Ralph Lauren store as well!
