Grayson Highlands State Park Family Photos

Courtney and Cody have long been one of my favorite couples to work with, so it was positively exciting when they reached out about capturing a maternity session! Although they’re based in Raleigh, when I suggested that we could meet up at Grayson Highlands State Park to see some wild ponies they decided to make the trip out to Mouth of Wilson!
Why Grayson Highlands State Park?
Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia is a magical place. And it’s a photographer’s paradise in all seasons. I’ve been in multiple spots throughout the Appalachian Trail but Grayson Highlands, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful parks on the east coast. It’s also one of the most photographed hikes in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
It has a lot to offer, with Virginia’s highest peak at Mount Rogers and rolling hills through dense rhododendron. Visit in June and the hills will be covered in pink flowers. Not to mention the wild ponies, who are actually pretty friendly and will nibble at your pockets in search of a snack. Watch your fingers though–sometimes they can get a little too friendly!
Setting The Scene
We met up for this Grayson Highlands State Park family session on a gray, cloudy, Sunday afternoon. Even with the dense fog the fall foliage was truly starting to peek through for their Grayson Highlands State Park maternity photos!
These three were absolute troopers and trekked up the Rhododendron Trail with ease. We even managed to see a couple of ponies on our way up to the top! We hung out with the ponies and explored for quite some time until the Sunday crowd started to appear on the trails.
